During the Covid-19 pandemic, we noticed how vaccine hesitancy became a divisive issue. While the evidence points irrefutably to vaccination as best the defence against the virus, for a number of reasons, many remain resistant to vaccination. At Studio Fundi we were frustrated with the resistance to Covid-19 vaccination and the misinformation that was spread about it. Our exasperation grew when South Africa was unjustly placed on the ‘red list’, effectively banning travel and putting a stop to one of South Africa’s main revenue-producers.
We wanted to play a small role in increasing vaccine uptake, even with a limited budget and resources. So we designed badges and had them manufactured to hand out for free to anyone who had been vaccinated. The goal was to use social proofing as a mechanism to nudge the unvaccinated to take the leap. We wanted to communicate that it is ‘cool’ and safe to be vaccinated. That people were proud of their decision to be vaccinated, and willing to prove it to others. The hope was for vaccine sceptics to see the vaccinated walking around communicating the message: “I’m fine after my vaccination and you will be too.”
We distributed over 1000 badges to friends, family and passers-by. The campaign was positively received and sparked conversations about the importance of vaccination in protecting yourself, your family and your community. Between social media and viral marketing, we estimate the campaign reached over 5000 people.
